The Mexican resort of Cancun will provide Bernie Ecclestone with another Formula One venue option from 2006, as well as another stick with which to beat the British Grand Prix, it was confirmed today.

As suggested last week, Mexican motorsport authorities have confirmed that talks with Ecclestone, who flew north from Sunday's Brazilian GP, have led to an agreement to construct a new circuit in Cancun, and a five-year deal to stage Formula One grands prix, possibly from as early as the 2006 season. The country has been missing from the F1 schedules since 1992, when the last race was staged at Mexico City's Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The new circuit will be designed, like those in Bahrain, Shanghai and Istanbul, by Formula One's resident penman Hermann Tilke, and will again take into account the host country's history, culture and topography.
