Transmission halts Fiat
Failure of part of the FIA controlled transmission system on Paolo Andreucci's Fiat Punto Abarth S2000 ended his bid to win the Rally dell'Adriatico last weekend (April 1/ 2, second round of the Italian championship). As he continued to fight his way back after disadvantageously running first car on the road on this gravel event, then falling back again with power steering problems, he lost drive to the rear wheels on the first stage of second day of the event.
His teammate Andrea Navarra, however, climbed two places on the short final day of the event, to finish second behind Piero Longhi's winning Subaru. A Fiat team spokesman commented that Andreucci's problems started because he had to make up time after running first car on the road, creating far greater stresses on the transmission than experienced during the previous all-asphalt event. This development is bad news for the proponents of the FIA's new rally formula, in which the use of a standardised transmission system is an integral aspect of the aim to avoid unnecessary costs.
